Drone facade and roof surveys, answered straight.
The questions we hear from structural engineers, envelope consultants and architects before the first flight.

Does the Boston facade ordinance allow drone inspections?
Yes. Boston Ordinance §9-9.12(d)(iii) states that the Registered Professional "may use other methods of inspection as deemed appropriate, including the use of digital imaging, video and drone technology appropriate to complete a comprehensive inspection." The drone survey supports the Registered Professional; it does not replace the required hands-on examination or the sealed report.
Does a drone survey eliminate scaffolding or swing stages?
Not entirely, and any drone operator who says otherwise has not read the ordinance. A physical, hands-on examination of representative areas still needs an observation platform. What the drone survey does is capture the complete envelope first, so you can reduce the number of drops and place each one where the imagery shows distress, rather than guessing in advance.
How much detail can a drone capture from a safe standoff distance?
Enough to resolve cracking, sealant failure, spalling, displaced units and corrosion staining at close range on every elevation. We agree a target Ground Sample Distance (GSD) with you during scoping, then plan the standoff distance and lens to meet it, keeping a safe buffer from the facade for wind.
Can you fly in downtown Boston and Cambridge, near Logan Airport?
Yes. Most of Boston and Cambridge sits inside Logan’s Class B airspace. Every flight is conducted under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 with authorization obtained through the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) or directly from the FAA, plus a site-specific safety plan for pedestrians and adjacent properties.
Do you sign or seal inspection reports?
No. New England Drone Services is not an engineering or architecture firm, and we do not compete with you. We collect and organize the data under your direction; you interpret it, classify the walls and seal the report.
What does thermal imaging add to a facade or roof assessment?
Radiometric infrared reveals temperature patterns consistent with trapped moisture, air leakage and missing insulation that are invisible in a photograph. Thermal findings are indications, not conclusions: they tell you where to take moisture readings, cores or test cuts, so your destructive testing is targeted.
